Find the ratings insert for your . It is an A4 sheet, which is inserted into itself, but not attached to it. It should be titled “Appendix" and contain your last name, first name and patronymic, the name of the educational institution, your information about your internship, and also, on the reverse side, a list of disciplines in which tests were passed and with the number of hours and the final grade. Consider the average score according to the diploma supplement, and not according to the grade book. It takes current course grades into account and only final grades should be used when calculating the average. For example, if a course lasted two semesters, the last grade earned is used for calculation.
Count the number of academic disciplines in which you received not just tests, but grades. Record the number you get. Then separately count the number of marks “excellent”, “good” and “”.
Multiply the resulting number of marks by the number of points corresponding to them. For example, the number of “excellent” ratings must be multiplied by five. Add up the resulting values and then divide them by the total number of subjects in which grades were obtained. You will get an average score. Depending on the school's requirements, but generally with a GPA greater than 4.5, you may receive a recommendation.

To obtain a diploma with honors - the so-called “honors diploma” - an average score of 4.8 is usually sufficient. Unlike a school certificate with a gold medal, a diploma is allowed to have fours, but there should not be threes in it. Also, retaking the exam may interfere with obtaining such a diploma - at some universities, retaking the exam from a “satisfactory” mark to another will increase your average score, but will not entitle you to a diploma with honors.
Students are given appropriate grades for passing exams, completing academic semesters, or completing various assignments. There are several ways to find them out.

The announcement of grades for academic semesters (quarters) at school is the responsibility of teachers. If for some reason you were not present when the grades were announced, you can inquire about them individually. Some teachers allow you to find out grades by looking at the class log, but according to the rules they are not required to show this document to students. In addition to the teachers themselves, parents of students can view the magazine upon request.
Teachers usually post grades for passing the Unified State Exam on the school information board as soon as the results are known. You can also get information about the exam results on the official website of the Unified State Exam. Go to the section “Applicants to Universities and Colleges” on the main page of the site and select “Check Unified State Exam Results” in the menu that appears.
Very often, university and school graduates need to calculate the average score of the certificate received. It may be required upon admission to a foreign university or when applying for a job. When calculating GPA, all grades indicated in the certificate or diploma are taken into account. These can be final grades: in subjects, for coursework and dissertations, for state exams. If you already have your education document in your hands, there is no need to take into account any intermediate grades that you have entered in your school electronic journal or grade book.
The next point concerns only students: do they need to take credits into account and, if so, how exactly to take them into account.
If your university uses a 5-point system for assessing knowledge plus “pass/fail”, students entering foreign universities can calculate the average score of their diploma in one of two ways:
- « Credits" are taken into account.“Pass” = 5 points, “fail” = 0 points. Average diploma score = arithmetic average of points for all subjects in the insert, including “pass” and “fail”.
- “Credits” are not taken into account. GPA = arithmetic mean of all points received.
The arithmetic mean of both school performance and diploma grades is calculated using the formula:

In the example given, we show the calculation of the average score for students, but schoolchildren calculate according to the same scheme. Since most schools do not take tests, this type of performance assessment is not included in the calculation.

According to the formula indicated above, the average diploma score will be equal to:
64/14 = 4.64 taking into account credits or
44/10 = 4.4 - if credits are not taken into account.
If the student has no “failures,” the first calculation system raises the student’s average diploma score. Many universities do not define the procedure for calculating the GPA, and the choice of calculation method remains up to the applicant.
How to find out GPA if your studies have not yet been completed
As a rule, admission to a foreign university begins a year or a year and a half in advance. If at this time the schoolchild or student is still continuing his studies, he can independently calculate the average score based on intermediate grades in order to assess his chances of admission. In this case, the following grades can be taken as a basis for calculating GPA:
1. Only completed subjects for which final grades have already been assigned.
2. All completed and most recent grades for incomplete courses.
When sending an official application to a university, if a certificate or diploma has not yet been received, the applicant must provide a transcript - a letter with grades, in which the average score will be indicated by the university. In addition, the applicant must inform the university about the deadline for submitting final grades.
How to indicate GPA in an application for admission
The rule for indicating GPA in the application for admission is simple: indicate not only the average score, but also tell the admissions committee the maximum possible score in your program, since in different countries the maximum score can be 4, 5 or 10 points.
For example: if your university/school has a 5-point grading system and your average score is, say, 4.1, then in your application for admission you need to indicate “GPA 4.1 out of 5.”

When reporting your diploma GPA, do not forget to indicate the maximum possible score. In the above example, it would be "4.64 out of 5" or "4.4 out of 5". A diploma of first higher education or a transcript of the applicant will be attached to the application for admission, so the university will in any case see all your grades.
GPA in educational systems of the world
In world university practice, several methods of calculating the average score are most common. Thus, in Britain, grades from the first courses are often not taken into account, while in the USA and Europe the average score is calculated taking into account the credit hours that the student has accumulated (and the weight of credits in America and Europe is different).

Knowing your average score is usually necessary for university graduates, as they are sometimes asked about it when applying for a job. It is calculated using the method of determining the arithmetic mean of all grades received (we are talking only about those grades that appear on the diploma).

- Take your diploma, and if you don’t have it yet, then your grade book, and count the number of grades. It is important for those who use the record book to be careful: only those grades that go towards the diploma are taken into account. Therefore, first, find out which of them definitely do not go there and, accordingly, do not take them into account. As a rule, grades for some differentiated tests are not included in the diploma - in cases where the subject has not yet been completed. Remember that grades from coursework and internships are always included in your diploma.
- Count the total points received. Those. just add score to score. It will be easier and faster to count how many fives, how many fours and how many threes you have and multiply each of these estimates by its number.
- Divide the resulting amount of points by the total number of ratings. The resulting number will be your average score.
- Example: your diploma contains grades in 45 subjects. Of these, you received 20 A's, 20 B's and 5 C's. Multiply 20 by 5, 20 by 4 and 5 by 3. Add the resulting numbers (100, 80 and 15). Divide this amount (195 points) by 45. The result will be approximately 4.3. Therefore, your GPA is 4.3.
When summer comes, school graduates are faced with many questions, because they have to choose an educational institution and decide on their future profession. With the beginning of the admissions campaign, many begin to wonder how to find out the average score of the certificate.
Why this indicator is needed and how it is calculated is a pressing question for all applicants.
Why is the indicator needed?
The average score of the certificate is calculated by those applicants who plan to enter a secondary specialized educational institution. Currently in Russia there is a rule according to which people are admitted to colleges without entrance examinations (but there are some exceptions). The admissions committee only looks at the average score of the educational document and does not take into account the Unified State Examination results.
In universities, completely different rules apply. Many people may not even think about how to calculate their GPA. The fact is that institutes, academies and universities do not look at this indicator. Applicants are accepted only taking into account the results of the Unified State Examination in certain subjects or taking into account the results of entrance tests conducted for certain categories of persons.
About the absence of entrance tests in colleges
Entrance tests are not provided for in many specialties. For example, you will not need to take anything if you choose “economics”, “law and organization of social security”, “tourism”, “hotel service”. Small testing is provided for those specialties that require certain professional qualities. Tests are taken in “nursing” and “medicine”. In creative specialties related to design, applicants complete a drawing.
For educational programs that include tests and creative tasks, special admission rules apply. First, employees of a particular technical school or college look at the result of the entrance test. This can be either a “fail” or a “pass”. In the first case, the applicant is denied admission, without even paying attention to what average grade point he has. If “passed,” the applicant is allowed to participate in the certificate competition.
An example of calculating the average score of a certificate
Let's say we have a document on education. How to calculate GPA? Take the insert that accompanies this document. Next, we count how many disciplines we studied during our school years. We got 20 items. Next, we take a calculator and add up all the grades that are indicated in the appendix to the certificate, or we calculate the total amount in our heads. The final value is 87.
Now we just have to calculate the average score of the certificate. As you can see, we have 2 values. Divide the sum of grades by the number of items. The calculator screen displays the number 4.35. This is our average certificate score. The maximum possible value is 5. This is the average score for excellent students.
Competition between applicants: equality of average scores
Often, admissions officers are faced with a situation where there is only one budget place left, and several people with the same average certificate score are applying for it. How do I know who will be accepted? The selection of an applicant for the last budget place is carried out taking into account grades in certain subjects.
For example, let's take the Moscow College of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If the average scores are equal, this educational institution looks at grades in specialized disciplines - Russian language, English language and history. In other educational institutions, it is recommended to clarify the conditions for admission, because specific specialized subjects are defined for each specialty.
If the indicator is high
Excellent students don’t even have to think about how to calculate their average certificate score. Paths to various technical schools and colleges are open to them. If the average score is 5, then documents can be submitted to any educational institution. In specialties without additional entrance tests, admission is guaranteed.
You may not be able to enroll in educational programs with additional tests and creative assignments. However, the likelihood of this happening is very low. Excellent students always prepare responsibly for admission. “Failure” is possible only if the applicant is too worried. An unsatisfactory result can also occur due to the wrong choice of profession or a rash step. But this is possible purely theoretically. In practice, a different picture is observed.
If your GPA is low
With a low average score on a budget, it is impossible to enter prestigious and highly sought-after colleges, because after the entrance campaign the best applicants are selected. If your grades are poor, it is recommended to apply to educational institutions that are not in high demand.
There is another option - to go to college not after the 9th grade, but after the 11th grade. After 9th grade, many graduates go to apply to colleges. The competition is very high. After the 11th grade, there are fewer people who want to become students at technical schools and colleges. The majority of graduates set themselves the goal of obtaining a higher education.
A few years ago, graduates did not think about how to calculate the average score of the certificate, and did not worry about the grades in the document. Admission to colleges was based on the results of passing exams in general education subjects. For example, in medical colleges, upon admission to “nursing,” applicants wrote a dictation in the Russian language. In biology, passing the exam was carried out using tickets.
There is no need to prepare for exams now, but it is worth taking care of your grades in order to obtain a higher average score for admission to college. Therefore, in the 9th and 11th grades, take a more responsible approach to your studies. If you have problems in any subjects, consider the services of a tutor. It will help you master school material and understand complex topics. Schools often conduct additional classes and electives. You can visit them too.
And one more piece of advice. If your grades are low in 9th grade, then consider continuing your studies in school. In grades 10-11, you can get higher grades if you pay attention to your studies and try hard. If you are unable to cope with a significant part of the subjects, concentrate on preparing for the Unified State Exam in those disciplines in which you are strongest. Also choose a major related to these subjects. Having passed the Unified State Exam well, you will get a chance to enter a university. In any academy they won’t even look at your average score, but will take into account your Unified State Exam results.
How to calculate your GPA is a fairly simple question. Use the method described above. You can also define the indicator differently. Multiply the number of threes by “3”, the number of fours by “4”, the number of fives by “5”, then add all the values and divide by the number of subjects studied. You will end up with the same average score.
The average score of a higher education diploma in Russia may be required only when employing a freshly graduated university graduate in branches of large foreign companies, or less often in domestic giants like Gazprom. In a couple of years, when a young specialist can already indicate experience and length of service in a professional resume, no one will remember about the grades in the insert and no one will check them before hiring. But when entering a master's or graduate school in almost all foreign colleges and universities, GPA - the average score of the diploma - is necessarily taken into account, so it will have to be calculated very carefully.

The abbreviation GPA (Grade Point Average) denotes the average grade of academic performance derived from the grades received by the student for a certain period. Each university has its own requirements for calculating the GPA. Some institutions ask to calculate GPA for the 3-4th years of study, others - only in certain subjects, others - taking into account all the marks indicated in the insert: final grades for the studied program disciplines, coursework and thesis, module tests and state exams. Therefore, specific parameters must be found out at the university chosen for further education.
How to calculate the average diploma score for European universities
Technically, calculation methods differ radically depending on the country where the university is located.
Germany
First, the average score for the diploma is calculated, then the result is translated into German format - most often according to the Bavarian system using the formula:
The Russian diploma score (N d) is calculated as the usual arithmetic average: the sum of all grades is divided by their number. If the university requires credits to be included in the GPA calculation, then they are evaluated by the highest score accepted at the graduate’s alma mater.
For example: for a standard Russian scale with the highest grade of five and an average diploma score of 4.2, after converting it, it turns out to be 2.2:
Don't rush to despair. The scoring scale in Germany is the opposite of that generally accepted in most universities in Russia: in it, one is excellent, two is good, etc. In medical universities, the passing score is usually set in the range of 1-1.3; for prestigious economic specialties - about 1.7. The lower limit for enrollment in a master's program is 2.5.
Not all German universities use this conversion formula - some develop their own grade transfer schemes.
England
The United Kingdom uses a verbal descriptive rating scale.
How to calculate the average score in a diploma for America
In the USA, a four-point rating scale has been adopted:
Before entering American universities, you must calculate your diploma GPA, taking into account the number of hours of studying the discipline, which are indicated in the application, and after converting Russian grades into the American system.
- history (100 hours) - excellent;
- social studies (145 hours) - excellent;
- philosophy (90 hours) - satisfactory;
- theory of translation (85 hours) - excellent;
- foreign literature (70 hours) - good.
- Calculate “point hours”: 100 x 4 + 145 x 4 + 90 x 2 + 85 x 4 + 70 x 3 = 1710.
- Calculate the total number of hours: 100 + 145 + 90 + 85 + 70 = 490.
- Calculate GPA: divide the amount of points by the hours spent to obtain them: 1710: 490 = 3.48 ≈ 3.5.
When indicating your GPA on your application for admission, be sure to specify the highest possible score, as it differs for each country. For example: 8.56 out of 10 (8.56 out of 10).
