Tipler: There is something that you personally don’t like about Yandex. Direct or Goggle Adwords? What would you change?

Ilya Tsymbalist: Previously, Direct was quite noticeably different from Google. And the main difference was precisely that Direct provided for a lot of manual settings, which could not be said about advertising in AdWords, where everything is very automated.
A series of recent changes that have occurred in Direct are increasingly erasing the difference between these two services. For example, after entering the second header in Direct, the procedure for transferring campaigns from AdWords became greatly simplified. Now the transfer can be implemented using a CSV file.
I won’t talk about what specifically I would like to change in Direct. The main wish is that Direct, as before, will still have enough options for manually managing campaigns. Tipler: In what cases do you need to configure YAN, and in which Search? What does this depend on?

Ilya Tsymbalist: Search traffic and traffic from Networks (YAN) differ in cost, quality, and volume.
Approaches to running search and online campaigns are also individual. Simply put, what works in search will not work on the Web and vice versa.

Tipler: What conversion rate for Search is considered normal - 5,10,15%? And what should the conversion be like with YAN?

Ilya Tsymbalist: As F. Tsarevsky says, advertising by itself is helpless. And on this I completely agree with him. The purpose of advertising is to attract interested traffic to the site. The purpose of the site is to sell. Therefore, the conversion of any campaign (either from search or from the Network) depends, for the most part, on the site for which the advertising is running.

Tipler: What is the importance of assessing the quality of an account in Direct and Google? How is it compiled? What does it really affect and does it affect?

Ilya Tsymbalist: I don’t consider myself a Google expert, so I’ll only answer via Direct. I would call the account quality indicator a “litmus test” for the effectiveness of advertising efforts for the account as a whole. In other words, this indicator is based on the performance of all campaigns in the account, and not on any single campaign. The indicator is collected in real time and updated once a day. The maximum value is 10.

But it is important to understand one thing here. This is an indicator of the effectiveness of your advertising efforts through the eyes of Yandex. For example, one of the system’s basic recommendations for improving efficiency is this: avoid ad stops. If your campaigns stop frequently, you will never get a “ten” from Yandex. It’s one thing if stopping campaigns is an advertiser’s miscalculation. For example, the advertiser did not replenish the balance on time or set the daily budget limit too low. Another thing is if the advertiser makes stops deliberately, for reasons of rational spending of the advertising budget. For example, you advertise a resource where you can place an order between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. In general, the owner of such a resource should think about optimizing the process of accepting orders, but this is not the question now. In fact, if you attract users to such a site from 18 pm to 10 am, then the conversion will be zero. After all, there is simply no one to take the order. Yandex doesn't like this, because... he doesn't earn anything while your ad is running. That is why the system recommends that you avoid stopping displays.

As for the influence of this indicator on the work of campaigns, then direct influence This is exactly what the cost you pay per click will not have. But it’s worth remembering that the lower the quality score, the higher the entry prices for prominent display positions. And not because the indicator is low, but because advertising does not work quite correctly. And the quality indicator just signals this.

Ilya Tsymbalist: The reach of the audience of potential buyers depends on the volume of phrases in the semantics of the campaign. The dependence is simple: the more phrases, the wider the audience of potential buyers. The only question is the target affiliation of the selected phrases and the availability of “live” results for them in Yandex Wordstat. The method of modeling phrases by concatenation has not worked for a long time. It was not very effective before, but now, after the introduction of the “Few impressions” status, it has completely lost its relevance.

Tipler: Where to go to study to become a directologist? There is no such discipline in universities yet, but there are many teachers and schools. There are also well-known expert directologists..... What should you look for when choosing a school?

Ilya Tsymbalist: If I understand you correctly, then we are talking about the profession of “directologist” as a full-fledged profession that can feed yourself and your family. In this case, the choice of online training should be approached in exactly the same way as in real life. For example, you decide to enroll in training and are considering two options. The first booklet tells about the regalia educational institution, his rich history etc. The second booklet briefly states that after training, the institution undertakes to employ you in your specialty with a clearly defined salary amount. Which institution would you prefer to study at?

Tipler: Do you think targeted advertising can compete with contextual advertising? After all, the cost of a click in the first one is many times lower? And can they - contextual and targeted advertising - exist together within the framework of one business strategy?

Ilya Tsymbalist: Apparently, your question refers to targeted advertising with payment for impressions. But there is a second option - pay-per-click. So, the cost of pay-per-click advertising, for example, on VKontakte, is not very different in cost from advertising on the Network in Direct.
The quality of traffic from pay-per-impression advertising is significantly different from pay-per-click advertising. Here it is fundamentally important to have a clear idea of ​​the portrait of the target audience and its segmentation. The quality of the traffic attracted will depend on this knowledge.
As for the question of whether these two types of advertising can work in one harness, my answer is this: of course, they can, unless there are restrictions in the system specifically on your type of business. For example, advertising training in Direct cannot be advertised on VKontakte. This is clearly stated in the Rules, and it will not be possible to pass moderation here.

Tipler: How to create a really high-quality ad so that it works? Do I need to include the key in the title and body of the ad?

Ilya Tsymbalist: For an ad to truly work, it must be targeted to the audience segment you want to reach. Simply typing words from a keyword phrase will not solve the problem.
